Photo Friday Challenge ~ Best of 2005

It seems a nearly impossible task...to choose the "best" photo from the archives of a year. I finally settled on this one, because it moves me. This was a moment of magic for me, to stumble across this lone musician, playing from his soul to the expanse of the mountains and Lake Tahoe. I heard the music in the distance and followed the sound. I don't think he was ever aware I was there. It brings me pure joy.

3/16/04

I am really itching to get outside for some pictures and the weather just IS NOT cooperating. We are getting substantial snow today...and I was ready for spring. Yesterday, I saw a few bunches of little snowdrops that had bloomed and I tried to get a picture of them But it was too windy and I just couldn't get a good exposure. I was disappointed - up close they are beautiful.
So - I'm dipping into the archives again.
I love cats...I always have. But we can't have cats because we have TWO family members with allergies. However, this little fellow was my kitten fo a couple of days one summer. One day, I heard meowing under my deck. My husband (allergic person and cat hater) was out of town. So I coaxed the kitten out and we kept him in the laundry room until we could find him a good home. He was a total sweetheart. I hope he's happy.

Incredible photo. I'm still trying to figure out to reduce redeye, much less capture such wonderful definition. Visual skills aren't my strong point, but I do enjoy them so.Comment from sistercdr - 3/16/04 7:04 PM

Kat, what a great shot. I too am allergic to cats and I hate it because my baby and my hubby love them. My baby loves them so much that he told me he'll just have to get a new mommy that loves cats. I considered getting allergy shots but can't bear the thought of needles so I get him all the stuffed cats that I can. I showed him this photo and he asked if we can buy him. Awwwwww! Glad to see you back. ~RC~Comment from queenz43 - 3/16/04 6:46 PM

Lovely shot.. this cat's eye's are so expressive. ¤HollyComment from

First Hints of Spring (3/11/04)

Spring is taking it's sweet time here in PA this year. Some days I think it's here, and the next it seems we'll live in perpetual winter doldrums. There's very little out there yet that shouting "Welcome Spring!" But I have found some of the smallest signs.

I think Spring is my favorite season. Time to crawl from beneath the covers of winter and get outside! We've had a few teasing days here lately, but I have a feeling winter will get one more cold shot at us before March is over. April in Louisville is beautiful though, with everything blooming. Great Picture!Comment from
daphneh2o33 - 3/13/04 11:44 AM

Rebirth is good. Spring is cool. But I am not quite ready for it. Maybe one more snow would do it! I am not sure why. Maybe Spring means Summer, hard to say. At any rate, the signs are around. It just takes a careful observer like you to note them. Thanks for the beautiful reminders.Comment from

It's still to early to find much of interest outside. But, once things start growing I'll have a yard FULL of columbine. It self seeds and spreads like crazy - and it is one of the earliest of my garden delights. You can't help but notice the spectacular blooms...but if you're not out early, you might miss this.

Then and Now (3/7/04)

Nikki expressed an interest in seeing how the baby in the quarry series had grown up. He's almost nineteen now...and he's changed "just a bit". We still think he's pretty cute though! So...this is Schuyler...then and now (almost now - he's 17 in this shot).

You'd better lock that boy up! He's probably got more girls than he knows what to do with! It's so great to see how children change and yet how they stay the same. And I love the diaper "bubble butt" how cute is that!!!Comment from

I have enjoyed participating in the Photo Friday challenges for several weeks now. It has been very motivational in getting me thinking about creative seeing, and revisiting some older photos I have taken. To date, I have posted them on Fridays in my other journal, WalkWithMe.... While I will continue to post them there...I thought it would be appropriate to gather the previous entries here as well. Any comments would be most welcome.

I love the outdoors and I'm always noticing little things. My family has teased me mercilessly as I study a leaf, or an insect, or lichen or moss. The perfection and tenacity of nature is where I see God.

Berkeley

The quarry series seemed like a natural place to start. Now...what to do?! Everyone likes pet pictures, RIGHT?! This is Berkeley, my 4 1/2 year old golden retriever and my shadow. He's with me in my office, he's my walking companion, he'll even try to crawl under the piano when I play (and it's an upright). He's usually not a very cooperative photo subject. But once in awhile...he'll agree to pose.

I have always loved Golden Retrievers...and last year, I was able to adopt a Golden mix...she's a petite Golden, about 40 pounds, and one of the sweetest dogs I've ever owned. There's just something about a Golden's face that just makes you smile. Great pic!!PatrickComment from

Quarry Trip ~ Part 2

I have just a few more quarry pictures I want to include. I'm thrilled to have them posted as they've been stored away as slides WAY to long. I certainly appreciate the opportunities a pc and a scanner can provide. I see I could spend days here recovering memories. Perhaps I will.

Another quarry hole left from excavation

The next two photos have a little story. This quarry is located near a major university. Art students came here to sculpt. I don't know that these are by any means finished works, and I have no idea what they were supposed to be. What do you see?

This final picture is of my nephew. This little pumpkin will be NINETEEN this April. Where did the years go?

*Update...this is Schuyler, who was killed Aug. 3, 2005

Great shots Brat Kat! I especially love the one of your nephew. You should get one of him now and post them side by side. He's certainly a lady killer even as a toddler. My fave two quarry shots are the first one (with the blue/green water and the one with the ladder).Comment from
somenuttychic - 2/29/04 5:27 PM

Wow! Thanks for starting this Photoblog....It`s gonna be fun for all of us!VinceComment from
deabvt - 2/29/04 8:11 AM

What a find for would be sculptors!!! The nephew looks like he was a thoughtful guy. I hope he grew up to be happy. As we all know, thinking too much can be a challenge. I think the would-be sculptors had planned to be able to remove their sculptures but maybe did not realize how much heavy equipment would be required! Looks like a damn in the first photo. Is it?Comment from

Indiana Stone Quarry

My great grandfather founded a limestone company in southern Indiana. The business was passed down through the family but was shut down many years ago. However, we still hold the quarry land. These pictures are almost 20 years old, taken the last time I walked the property. I pulled them for the Photo Friday Challenge ~ Industrial. It gave me a lot of pleasure to revisit them. While I visited the quarry only a handfull of times, somehow they make me feel at home.

This is a tower attached to a crane that lifts the stone blocks out of the ground.

Gears that were part of the crane drive mechanism

The old swimmin' hole. Locals came here to swim. My dad grew up swimming in the quarry holes...but I never did.

Some unknown piece of a decaying crane.

I have a couple more photos from this excursion that I plan to post...next time!

Welcome

As a result of the advertising debacle at AOL, I am moving my photoblog to a new location. My intention is to bring all the old entries here, while inserting new images as frequently as I can. For those of you who have followed "From Every Angle"...I hope you enjoy this walk down memory lane. The support of the AOL journal community has been instrumental in my growth as a photographer. I hope you all will be with me for a long time to come.
